If a simple blood test could reveal early signs of Alzheimer\u2019s \u2013 years before symptoms appear- would you want to know?\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0a serious question. In May\u00a02025, for the first time, the\u00a0<\/span>FDA approved a simple diagnostic blood test for Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span><\/a>. And, based on\u00a0the literature, doctors are\u00a0very excited\u00a0about it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You should be, too.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why\u00a0Does\u00a0Early\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s\u00a0Detection\u00a0Matter?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Alzheimer\u2019s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder.\u00a0<\/span>Dementia<\/span><\/a>\u00a0from Alzheimer\u2019s\u00a0disease often does not show until 20 or more years after the\u00a0initial\u00a0pathological changes to the brain.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

More than 10% of people aged 65 and older have Alzheimer\u2019s. By\u00a02050,\u00a0that number is expected to double.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here is the science behind the test, which is available if you are at least 55 years old and have memory or thinking problems typically seen in Alzheimer\u2019s patients.\u00a0 <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Science Behind Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Alzheimer\u2019s is marked by two main changes in the brain: amyloid plaques outside brain cells and neurofibrillary tangles inside them. These are considered key signs of the disease.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amyloid Plaques Outside the Brain Cells<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The first change happens outside the brain cells. Amyloid plaques are clumps of protein that build up between neurons. Scientists think that these interfere with how brain cells communicate and may trigger inflammation in the surrounding tissue. According to the\u00a0<\/span>Fisher Center for Alzheimer\u2019s Research Foundation<\/span><\/a>, \u201cBeta-amyloid, in its toxic form, can start to accumulate in the brain up to 20 years before symptoms of Alzheimer\u2019s appears.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Neurofibrillary Tangles Inside the Brain Cells<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The second change happens inside the brain cells. Neurofibrillary tangles form inside neurons when their internal support system \u2014 called microtubules \u2014 breaks down. Scientists think that this disrupts the cell\u2019s structure and function, eventually contributing to cell death.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tau is a protein associated with microtubules. Measure the tau and beta-amyloid, and you have a\u00a0pretty decent\u00a0indicator of Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

H<\/span>ow\u00a0the\u00a0Lumipulse\u00a0Blood Test Works<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

The\u00a0Lumipulse\u00a0p-tau217 blood test allows doctors to analyze a\u00a0component\u00a0of your blood, plasma, to calculate the ratio of 2 proteins that have been shown to be an indicator for Alzheimer\u2019s disease: beta-amyloid and tau.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A positive\u00a0Lumipulse\u00a0test result does not mean that you have Alzheimer\u2019s disease; it is just an indicator that you may develop it down the road. The test is not perfect, but early results have shown that 92% of people who had a positive test reading had amyloid plaques that were confirmed by PET scans or spinal taps.\u00a0Regarding negative readings, 97% of those with\u00a0a negative\u00a0test\u00a0result\u00a0had negative amyloid findings with the other tests. Less than 20 percent of the people tested in a study had indeterminate results.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Why Would Someone Want to Know They Might Have Alzheimer\u2019s?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n

Why is it important to find out if you are predisposed to Alzheimer\u2019s? There are two main reasons.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a01. <\/span>It May Help Explain Memory Loss<\/span><\/h3>\n

First, the test can help\u00a0determine\u00a0if your memory loss and other symptoms are a result of Alzheimer\u2019s disease or a different disease. When you are going down the list of causes,\u00a0ruling out\u00a0Alzheimer\u2019s is a big one.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a02. I<\/span>t May Help Determine Treatment Options<\/span><\/h3>\n

The second reason is to find out if you are eligible for early Alzheimer\u2019s treatment. By the time you have full dementia symptoms, it is too late to take advantage of the currently approved medications that can slow or stop dementia.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The science behind Alzheimer\u2019s is not standing still, and perhaps someday there will be a total cure. Someday, but not yet.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
