\u201cDementia<\/a>\u201d is a global medical term used to describe different conditions and diseases that share common symptoms such as impaired memory, performance of daily activities and the ability to communicate.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some common types of these conditions or diseases are Alzheimer Disease, Vascular disorders, Down Syndrome, traumatic brain injuries, Huntington\u2019s Disease, Parkinson\u2019s Disease and Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

About 20% of the causes of dementia are reversible.\u00a0 The most common type of dementia, Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>, is currently not reversible.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many elderly people have some type of age-related forgetfulness that is not related to dementia.\u00a0 Never assume that your condition is actually dementia.<\/span><\/p>\n

Dementia and incapacity do not have identical meanings.\u00a0 Dementia is a medical term while incapacity is a legal term.\u00a0 In Texas, \u201cincapacity\u201d is defined as an adult who, because of a physical or mental condition, is substantially unable to:\u00a0 (a) provide food, clothing, or shelter for himself or herself; (b) care for the person\u2019s own physical health; or (c) manage the person\u2019s own financial affairs. \u00a0 Every person is presumed to have capacity until a court pronounces otherwise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
