People in the business usually don\u2019t realize they are speaking another language to outsiders. Until someone says, \u201cWhat in the world are you saying?\u201d, people will just keep talking in acronyms. In the world of guardianship there are so many of these initialisms that a person could almost communicate an entire sentence without saying a complete word.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Welcome, then, to the shorthand of Guardianship. Here is your primer:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private Professional Guardian (PPG)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a person that is paid or where guardianship is their profession. They are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hammerle.com\/legaltalk\/adult-guardianship\/what-is-a-private-professional-guardian\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">certified guardians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GAL-Guardian Ad Litem (GAL)\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A court-appointed person, usually a licensed attorney, with the sole responsibility of advocating for the best interest of a ward.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Attorney Ad Litem (AAL)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A court-appointed attorney that will represent the ward\u2019s wishes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guardian of Estate (GOE)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person who is appointed by a judge to be in control of the ward\u2019s property and finances.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GOP-Guardian of Person (GOP)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The person who is appointed by a judge to be in control of the ward\u2019s person. This usually includes determining residence, medical care, employment, and visitation rights for the ward.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annual Report (AP)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A document completed by the GOP which provides information about the ward\u2019s personal status, and any actions taken by the guardian in the past year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AA-Annual Accounting (AA)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A document filed with the court by the GOE which accounts for disbursements of the ward\u2019s property over which the guardian has control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TxCG-Texas Certified Guardian (TxCG)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professionals who are certified to be guardians in the state of Texas.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Certified Guardian (NCG)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These individuals have taken and passed a test to be a nationally certified guardian.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TGA-Texas Guardianship Association (TGA)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an association that helps support and promote guardians across the state of Texas, which includes both certified and non-certified guardians.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">JBCC-Judicial Branch Certification Commission (JBCC)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is part of the Office of Court Administration that oversees the certification, registration, and licensing of, among other things, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hammerle.com\/practice-areas\/estate-planning-probate\/guardianship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guardians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and guardianship programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The foregoing list includes the most common initialisms, but of course there are a lot more. It is easy to see how one could get lost in a conversation. Even after over 20 years in the industry I have to ask people to slow down so I can interpret the \u201csoup\u201d. I have an attorney friend who I often ask to slow down so I can catch up with the lingo. It is okay to ask people to slow down, or ask them to explain what they are saying, not only in guardianship matters, but in anything.
