Your second call? That, of course, is to your insurance agent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We all want an auto insurance carrier who works a claim quickly and fairly. But how can you find a good one who carries the auto policy you want?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Here are my top 10 recommendations.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Understand the Difference Between the Main Types of Automobile Coverage<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLiability\u201d coverage is the insurance that pays the other party for damages and injuries if you caused the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hammerle.com\/legaltalk\/adult-guardianship\/elders-limited-capacity-hazard-on-the-road\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accident<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCollision\u201d coverage pays to repair or replace your car after an accident.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cComprehensive\u201d coverage pays if your car is stolen or damaged by something other than a collision.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUninsured motorist\u201d coverage (\u201dUM\u201d) is intended to reimburse you for damages you suffered if the other driver is uninsured or underinsured.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPersonal injury\u201d protection (\u201cPIP\u201d), is insurance that pays for medical bills and associated costs if you or your passengers are injured in a car accident.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Use an Independent Insurance Agent to Shop for Auto Insurance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have used the same carrier for the last 10 years, but things change. Your carrier may have been bought out and the old adjusters fired and replaced with inexperienced people. Your carrier may have changed its internal policies on handling and settling claims. None of this will be disclosed by your carrier. An independent insurance agent will compare prices and coverage offered by different carriers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Do Your Homework<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research policy prices and types of insurance on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.helpinsure.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas Department of Insurance website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Sign Up for the Standard Policy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don\u2019t want some imaginatively written policy that gives you very limited coverage. Read the endorsements. Some carriers who offer a standard policy significantly reduce coverage through endorsements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Buy High Limits on All Your Coverage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost difference between a middle limit and a high limit can be relatively insignificant, but the higher payout could save you from a significant monetary loss.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6. Get a High Deductible<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to save money, then get a high deductible. Just make sure you can pay the deductible when the time comes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7. Buy Uninsured Motorist Coverage<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buy UM coverage that equals your liability coverage. You can\u2019t buy a higher UM coverage than your liability coverage, but you should at least match the amount.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8. Buy PIP Instead of MedPay<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medpay is medical payment coverage. It is an optional auto insurance coverage that helps pay for medical expenses after a car accident. PIP offers more comprehensive coverage, including payments for lost wages.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9. Read Your Policy<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By law, it must be written in plain language. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/Docs\/IN\/htm\/IN.2301.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Texas Insurance Code Section 2301.053<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides that a policy has a Flesch score of no less than 40. For example, Reader\u2019s Digest averages a Flesch score of about 65. The higher the Flesch score, the easier it is to read.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10. Check Your CLUE Report<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It shows claims filed for any car for the past seven years. Insurance companies can report information to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdi.texas.gov\/tips\/check-your-propertys-insurance-claim-history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CLUE<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when you file a claim.
