{"id":13082,"date":"2025-03-23T06:00:07","date_gmt":"2025-03-23T11:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/legaltalktexas.hammerle.com\/?p=13082"},"modified":"2025-06-18T11:58:05","modified_gmt":"2025-06-18T16:58:05","slug":"dementia-a-story-with-many-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hammerle.com\/legaltalk\/legal-talk\/dementia-a-story-with-many-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"Dementia: A Story with Many Victims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It never occurred to me that I would steer people toward a fictional murder mystery to explain the effects of dementia, but here we are.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/series\/299267-thursday-murder-club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Thursday Murder Club<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a book series by author Richard Osman, is about four elderly pensioners living in a retirement community who form a club to talk about unsolved murders. Their former professions \u2013 spy, psychiatrist, union leader, and nurse \u2013 give them a unique perspective. When a dead body turns up at their facility, they turn their focus to solving the mystery.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A subplot revolves around one of the pensioner\u2019s husbands who is in the beginning stages of dementia. We follow the disease\u2019s progression, and its effect on his wife and friends, through the rest of the series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have never read a book that so matter-of-factly depicts the horrors of dementia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Dementia?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hammerle.com\/legaltalk\/estate-planning\/dementia-in-the-real-world\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dementia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an umbrella term used to describe the symptoms of cognitive decline. It includes:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vascular<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lewy Bodies<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frontotemporal causes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A myriad of cognitive, behavioral, and psychological symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The largest culprit of dementia is Alzheimer\u2019s dementia. It is a progressive, neurodegenerative disease that is present in the brain long before symptoms occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The numbers are impressive: over 9 million people in the U.S. will suffer from Alzheimer\u2019s by 2030. Almost two-thirds of them will be women. It\u2019s here, and it\u2019s real.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms and Challenges of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer\u2019s is particularly unpleasant. It is marked by cognitive impairment, functional impairment, and behavioral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hammerle.com\/legaltalk\/estate-planning\/10-early-warning-signs-of-dementia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning Stage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It starts with mild cognitive impairment that does not interfere with the activities of daily living, then progresses to mild, then moderate, then severe dementia.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mild Stage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the mild Alzheimer\u2019s stage, a person is able to function independently but suffers from common difficulties. These include forgetting familiar words, losing everyday objects, trouble remembering names, forgetting material just read, and increasing trouble with planning and organizing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moderate Stage<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The symptoms of moderate Alzheimer\u2019s include forgetting personal history, confusion about time or place, increased risk of wandering, personality and behavioral changes, and needing help with bathing, toileting, and dressing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe Alzheimer\u2019s<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Severe Alzheimer\u2019s is typically the longest stage. At this point, the person requires full-time care, has a loss of awareness of recent experiences and surroundings, and experiences changes in physical abilities such as walking, sitting, and swallowing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Warning Signs of Dementia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the warning signs that someone may have dementia? According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alz.org\/alzheimers-dementia\/10_signs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, they are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Memory loss that disrupts daily life<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Challenges in planning or solving problems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty completing familiar tasks<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion with time or place<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New problems with words in speaking or writing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased or poor judgment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Withdrawal from work or social activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes in mood and personality<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnosing Dementia<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I see a lot of confusion among families regarding dementia. Some are too quick to pin that tag on a family member, while others are too slow. Neither approach is helpful.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, the family member should be encouraged to have a full medical evaluation that includes medical history, physical and neurological exams, mental status testing and information from friends and family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0If all non-dementia causes are ruled out, then the family\u2019s focus should turn to helping their family member by maximizing his or her function in daily activities, maintaining the quality of life, fostering a safe environment, promoting social engagement, and enhancing cognition, mood, and behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be Prepared for Medical Challenges With Hammerle <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morris<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our four pensioners in the Thursday Murder Club confront gang members, drug dealers, fraudsters, and murderers with admirable aplomb.\u00a0 And why not?
